FIG. 6 RECLASSICATION OF RENAMED BULK CARRIERS(DW≧40,000t)
(3) Among the IACS member societies, a remarkable distinction in technical ability and performance cannot but be acknowledged between major societies and minor ones. Some bulk carriers classed by RI, KR, CL, By, DNV or CCS are double classed with other major societies in new or reclassed ships.
(4) Among the IACS member societies, NK stands out from others in the respect that the rate of ageing ships is markedly low and the rate of reclassed ships is also markedly low. By contrast with NK, BV tends to have rather older ships and renamed ones.
(5) About half the number of the renamed ships have been reclassed. The rate of reclassing is high even in young ships. The status suggests that ships are often reclassed when they are sold.
It should be recognized as a normal practice in shipping that ships are
often reclassed when they are sold.
(6) There exist an irresponsible talk that most substandard ships are reclassed by non-IACS societies which promotes the problems of substandard ships. Far from it, the majority of the reclassed bulk carriers move among the IACS member societies and only a small number of bulk carriers are classed singly by non-IACS societies.
